Volunteer Opportunities

As a volunteer at University Health, you can discover the joy and satisfaction of knowing that you are making a difference in the lives of many and helping to lead the way to a healthier community.

There are many ways to get involved at UH! Our two campuses, University Health Truman Medical Center (UH TMC) and University Health Lakewood Medical Center (UH LMC), have a variety of volunteer needs. You can work assisting patients, staff, visitors and our long-term care residents.

College Student (18 and up) Volunteering

UH has volunteer opportunities available for college students interested in careers in healthcare. Our student volunteers are able to experience a healthcare setting while giving back to the community.

Student volunteers assist in a nonclinical capacity in various departments throughout the hospital. Students are required to commit to 60 hours of service during the semester to receive confirmation of volunteer hours.

Application deadline for fall semester is Sept. 15.

Application deadline for spring semester is Jan. 15.

Adult Volunteering

Volunteers play valuable and meaningful roles in the lives of patients throughout University Health. Daytime, evening and weekend opportunities are available at both University Health Truman Medical Center (2301 Holmes Street) and University Health Lakewood Medical Center (7900 Lee's Summit Road). Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community, gain career experience and meet new people. Discover the joy and satisfaction of knowing you are making a difference!

Please note: Adult Volunteers are required to complete a health assessment, background screening, and compliance lessons prior to volunteering.

Volunteer activities include:

  • Greeting and escorting patients.
  • Helping in our beautiful gift shops.
  • Assisting staff in clinics or on nursing units.
  • Facilitate recreational activities for residents of the University Health Lakewood Care Center.
  • Providing clerical support or data entry services.
  • Assisting with special events and community outreach activities.
  • Create floral arrangements.
  • Wheelchair Repair.
  • One World Pantry.

Youth Volunteering

The Summer Youth Volunteer program at University Health is a great way for high school students to complete community service hours and gain experience in a medical setting. We offer two programs for youth volunteers during the summer.

Summer@UH

Summer@UH is a traditional youth volunteer program in which students 15 to 17 years old may volunteer up to three days a week in various departments throughout the hospital. Volunteer opportunities include hospital gift shop, inpatient nursing stations, long-term care and more.

Careers in Healthcare

Careers in Healthcare is designed for junior and senior high school students interested in pursuing a healthcare career. Students shadow employees in various departments.

Donations and Drives

University Health holds various drives throughout the year to benefit our patients and community.

Clothing drives. University Health serves more than 100,000 patients annually, many with limited financial resources. We constantly need various clothing items to give to our patients at the time of discharge. This includes men's and women's underwear, socks, shirts, pants and flat shoes. Donations must be new, in original packaging, with tags attached.

Holiday gift bags. Adopt a resident in the University Health Lakewood Care Center (long-term care) during the holiday season. Fulfill their simple wish list and make their holidays a little brighter.

  • Books and other reading material.
  • Reading glasses.
  • Handmade items.

Current opportunities

URGENT NEED! Floral Arrangement Assembler

Bring joy to someone’s day by assembling floral arrangements that are sold in the gift shops. Volunteers must be available a minimum of one to two days a week. Requires standing on feet for 5+ hours. Floral experience preferred but not required. HSD and LW location. Hours and days are flexible.

Gift Shop Assistant

Help with stocking shelves after store closes. HSD location. Tuesdays and Fridays from 2pm-4pm.

URGENT NEED for Mondays! Assist customers, cashier and stock. LW location. 9am-2pm. Also need someone on-call to sub for volunteers.

Lakewood Long Term Care Center Activities Volunteer

Looking for people who want to improve the quality of life of our long term care residents simply by being like extended family. Looking for someone to help with sorting/distributing mail, passing out snacks, playing games, visiting with residents, provide assistance to church/chapel, reading, talking, listening, painting nails, etc. ** All potential volunteers for LTC will need to complete a separate interview with the supervisor early in the onboarding process. Days and times to volunteer are scheduled with the supervisor. LW location. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 1:30pm-2:30pm, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 9:30 am-11:00am, Thursdays 1:30pm – 3:30pm.

URGENT NEED! Chaperones needed to attend shopping trip to Walmart in Lee’s Summit with our Long Term Care Residents. LW location. March 20 and March 21. 2 shifts per day – AM and PM.

Rehabilitation Services

Sanitizing beds, equipment, light clerical, filing and resident/patient wheelchair transportation if needed. LW location. Days and times scheduled with director.

URGENT NEED! Wheelchair Repair

Must be mechanically inclined and be available to volunteer one day per week. We need volunteers who can fix wheelchairs. LW location. Days and times scheduled with director.

Sewing and Crafts

Calling all seamstresses, knitters and those who love to crochet. We gladly accept donations of baby blankets for our infants and lap blankets, quilts and tote bags for our long-term care residents. The totes are for wheelchairs. We have specifications for baby blankets.

Nursing Units

Work under the supervision of a unit coordinator. Duties may include answering phones, help w/stocking supplies. Nursing stations offer exposure to physician’s rounds, unit report & operations, patient contact by answering call lights and relaying messages to the assigned nurse, nursing care, & nurse/patient interaction. HSD and LW location. Monday - Friday 8am-4pm. Let us know your availability.

Guest Services

Greeter at hospital/clinic/ER entrances, reminding patients/visitors/staff upon entering hospital to mask up & hand sanitize (all provided at stations upon entering), provide directions & assist them to clinic if needed. Help with wheelchairs, etc. Be a helpful smiling face! HSD location. Monday - Friday 6am-7pm. Let us know your availability.

Greeter at hospital facility entrances, reminding patients/visitors/staff upon entering hospital to mask up & hand sanitize (all provided at stations upon entering), provide directions & assist them to clinic if needed. Help with wheelchairs, etc. Be a helpful smiling face! Retrieve newspapers at the main lobby front doors. Get cart from storage to disburse to areas and divide stack and display at main lobby and long-term care entrance. Wipe down desk and phones with purple wipes. Check wheelchairs and ensure they are locked. Do a walkthrough of the front and back area of main lobby to ensure it is neat and straight. Check holders for maps. Put cart back in storage. Answer phones and assist with inquiries. Provide bears if needed. LW location. Mondays and Fridays 7am - 3:30pm. Let us know your availability.

URGENT NEED! One World Pantry

Meet with patients to determine their individual needs and goals. Assist with the screening survey. When indicated, help with forms to request resources. Maintain inventory of resources. Take part in program planning and implementation. Bending and lifting up to 50 pounds. Sanitizing counters. Fill and prepare food bags. Data entry. Can only take one volunteer a day due to space. Hours are 9am-5pm and can be divided between volunteers but only one volunteer if able to assist the whole day.

Archives

Historian is looking for someone to scan historical documents. HSD location. Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday 9am-2pm. Thursday & Friday may be available.

Behavioral Health

Greeter at the healing canvas location facility entrance & reminding those upon entering the facility to mask up & use hand sanitizer (all provided at stations upon entering). HSD location. Monday – Friday 8am-5pm. Let us know your availability.

GI & Pathology Lab Experience

Gross dissection of various organs. Microscopic evaluation of benign and malignant conditions. Autopsies. In addition, volunteers have the opportunity to rotate in other areas in the lab including Blood Bank, Microbiology and Clinical Chemistry.

Serious inquiries only. Offered to medical, pre-med, & nursing students. HSD location. The experience will be 3 weeks in path lab & 1 week in GI lab.

Emergency Room

Serious inquires only with a strong interest in a medical setting, or medical background such as enrolled in medical school or healthcare program. HSD location. Days and times scheduled with director.

Volunteer Services

Answering phones, distribution of needed items (clothing, shoes, toiletries, etc) to staff for patients and logging items. May sometimes assist in gift shop as needed, deliver mail and gifts to patients, light clerical projects, layette assembly, receiving donations & logging items and making patient access folders. HSD and LW location. Monday, Thursday or Friday 9-11am or 2-4pm.
