University Health unveils new neonatal intensive care unit
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — University Health unveiled a new neonatal intensive care unit this week. The new wing will serve vulnerable young patients.
For first-time mom, Imani Rue, seeing her newborn child, Dakota, in a new corner room is a little overwhelming.
"If your baby has to be in the NICU, it makes you more comfortable," Rue said.
She is talking about the new level-three NICU at University Health. The hospital officially opened the new unit on Tuesday.
"It's a feeling that's been literally years in coming," said Dr. Joshua Petrikin, NICU medical director.
The new $10 million wing was completely funded with a donation, replacing an older unit built nearly 50 years ago.
"The past NICU was a little tight, crammed. We were a little bunched up," Rue said.
