At University Health, we make it easy for you to get high-quality, comprehensive primary care, close to home. To us, primary care includes family medicine, internal medicine and internal medicine/pediatrics and pediatrics.
Our primary care providers offer healthcare services to people of all ages—from newborns to older adults. They can treat common conditions such as colds and flus, infections, depression and anxiety, as well as the aches and pains that you can’t figure out. They can also help you manage chronic illnesses, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma and high cholesterol.
Family medicine: Family medicine physicians help patients of all ages to prevent, manage and understand health issues of all types, including chronic conditions. Some family medicine physicians also have received additional training in obstetrics and can provide a full range of maternity care including the delivery of your baby. Some family medicine physicians receive additional training in sports medicine and in geriatrics (treatment of the elderly). In addition, some family medicine physicians also perform minor surgical procedures in the office setting.
Internal medicine: Internal medicine physicians are specialists that treat adult patients (age 18 years and older). Internal medicine physicians specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of adult diseases. They have been trained to manage and treat multi-system diseases; specifically puzzling diagnostic problems including severe chronic illnesses and multiple diseases at the same time.
Internal medicine/pediatrics: Internal medicine/pediatric physicians are trained in both internal medicine and pediatrics so they can treat patients of all ages. These physicians treat common illnesses and more advanced illnesses, as well as they work to manage all needs of a patient.
Pediatrics: Pediatricians care for children – from newborn babies to young adults (age 18). For complete information on our pediatricians and the clinics where they treat children, please visit our pediatrics service page.
Integrated behavioral health: Several of the primary care clinics have integrated behavioral health (IBH), which is a team-based consultation service focused on improving health outcomes by reaching more patients to address behavioral, psychological, and social factors that impact overall health. Integrated health psychologists offer short term, brief-solution focused interventions to assist in the behavioral management of physical health problems, assist in making behavioral changes such as quitting smoking and improve functioning associated with mental health needs. IBH services are available for established patients (in selected clinics) who have been referred by their primary care provider.
When you have a medical concern, your primary care provider should be your first call. In many cases, they'll be able to address the problem. If a specialist is needed, your primary care provider will give you a referral and will continue to oversee and coordinate your care.
For your convenience, University Health has primary care clinics located on our hospital campuses and in community locations throughout the Kansas City, Missouri, area.
