A new way to ask how you can help

We've all done it. A friend is struggling to feed an infant. So you ask, 'What can I do?".

UH psychologist Tiffany Ruffin, PsyD, supports pregnant women during their prenatal appointments. She opens up about some more productive ways family and friends can support a new mom.

Step One: Open your eyes before your mouth

Get a book or go online to a reputable source to educate yourself. And when it comes to new babies, there's plenty to read up on such as support groups, best positions to a hold baby when breastfeeding, why hydration is important, and a nursing mom's favorite healthy snacks.

Dr. Ruffin says new mothers might not know what they need, yet. So, as a friend or family member, you can do your research and offer specific things that come highly recommended.

Step Two: Help connect her with medical center's lactation consultants.

While lactation consultants often see new mothers immediately after birth, don’t forget, they are also available after mom leaves the hospital. Lactation consultants are the pros. And they are truly dedicated to supporting mothers and infants.

Step Three: Validate mom's feelings

You don't have all the answers. And that's okay. But Dr. Ruffin says simply saying things such as, 'You're doing such a good job' or 'I'm so proud of you. This can’t be easy,' are important steps to making a mom feel supported.

Step Four: Know when to get help

There's a new maternal mental health hotline that’s answered 24-7. Call or text 1.833.943.5746 if you're a new mother or are looking to support a new mom. Click here to learn more about UH services, education, and support.
