Research shows a link between an increase heart attacks and the Super Bowl. Keep reading for tips to make sure you’re doing well when the Chiefs (fingers crossed) receive the Lombardy Trophy.
"Your blood pressure goes up and your heart rate increases. This puts extra strain in your heart"
The energy and excitement that draws you into the game is also what can cause issues for your heart. “What you’re experiencing is the phenomenon termed the ‘fight-or-flight’ response,” said Paramdeep Baweja, MD, an interventional cardiologist at University Health. “In a stressful situation, your body releases a flood of chemicals such as adrenaline, which prepares your body for action. Your blood pressure goes up and your heart rate increases. This puts extra strain in your heart,” said Dr. Baweja. He adds that if you already have an underlying heart condition, the extra stress can raise the risk of heart attack or other heart problems.
Dr. Baweja doesn’t expect you to skip the big game if you do have an underlying heart condition, but he said what you do on game day matters.
- Start by skipping your morning coffee. You’ll have plenty of excitement during the day, your heart doesn’t need a jolt of caffeine too.
- Use those time outs to your own advantage. Take nice, slow breaths to stay relaxed.
- If you’re a smoker, try not to light up while watching. If you’re watching with smokers, ask them to step outside.
- Half time is a great time to fill up on snacks. Pick fresh fruits and vegetables to fill your plate and if you do take a small serving of something decadent, be sure to savor each bite.
- And finally, know the signs of heart attack. Common symptoms include chest pain or tightening, pain in your shoulder, arm and jaw, cold sweat, fatigue/dizziness, heartburn or nausea. Don’t wait to call 9-1-1 if you’re experiencing an emergency.
