Managing anxiety in large crowds
The summer brings plenty of opportunity to stand shoulder-to-shoulder in crowds, whether it be at a farmers market, amusement park or tailgating at a preseason game.
If the idea of being in a large gathering makes your stomach drop faster than the fastest waterslide, we can help. University Health Behavioral Health team leader Sarah Kaiser, LCSW, offers tips for dealing with anxiety in crowds.
“It’s important to be aware of your own anxiety, and to prepare yourself emotionally, before you get into the situation,” said Kaiser.
Kaiser offers the following tips:
- Start small. Visiting the busiest farmers market on a Saturday morning might be overwhelming. Try visiting a smaller market during the week.
- Have a plan. You don’t have to spend hours at an event. Pick an exit time.
- Know your body. If your heart is racing and you feel yourself starting to sweat, take a break. Find a bathroom or quiet spot to sit out for a bit.
