Surviving the summer sizzle

When it comes to being outside during the summer sizzle, Emergency Medicine Physician Dr. Adam Algren offers a simple warning: “I think people need to be very cautious.” Watch out for warning signs like headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and feeling lightheaded. These indicate your body is being stressed. Beware of heat exhaustion, especially when it progresses to heat stroke, where mental status becomes impaired. Heat stroke can have devastating consequences, including death. Other warning signs include fainting or confusion. Children are particularly at risk, as they may not always communicate discomfort. Dr. Algren emphasizes the importance of monitoring children closely, ensuring they stay hydrated, and take frequent breaks. Additionally, never leave anyone, especially pets, inside a hot car.
