The ABCs of Avoiding the ER

Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer!

Adam AlgrenDr. Adam Algren, Chair of Emergency Medicine at University Health, reminds all of us to use extra caution during this fun, but often high-risk season. “With Memorial Day being the official kickoff of summer, we see an increase in the number of people out on the roads, and that certainly increases the risk of car accidents,” Dr. Algren says. Wearing seatbelts remains one of the most effective ways to reduce injuries in crashes, as unbelted passengers are more likely to be severely hurt or ejected.

Substance use is another concern, especially when it comes to getting behind the wheel. “Anytime that you're using a substance such as alcohol or cannabis, it impairs your judgment and impairs your reaction time,” says Dr. Algren, stressing the risks across all types of vehicles—from ATVs to boats and cars.

Grilling safety, pool precautions, and food handling should also be top of mine.

Burns from propane grills, carbon monoxide poisoning from enclosed grilling, and foodborne illnesses from unrefrigerated dishes like potato salad are all potential landmines to avoid over the next three months or longer. Dr. Algren reminds us of the importance of designated sober adults supervising children near water.

Following Dr. Algren’s advice will help avoid meeting him and our other experienced providers in the ER.
