Hey, Kansas City! Here are some Best Practices for Preventing Heart Disease

  1. Healthy Diet – Focus on heart healthy choices (And yes, that includes KC barbecue!)
  1. Regular Physical Activity
  1. Routine Health Screenings
  • Check blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and BMI regularly.
  • Local Providers:
    • University Health offers heart screenings and preventive services.
    • Check our Community Health Education resources available to the community. Look for upcoming Chronic Disease Self-Management Programs (CDSMP), Diabetes Self-Management Programs (DSMP) and “Healthy Lifestyle Challenges” offered for free throughout the year. Incentives like free produce and blood pressure machines are offered to participants who maintain 100% attendance.
  1. Quit Smoking & Limit Alcohol
  1. Manage Stress
  • High levels of chronic stress can elevate heart disease risk.
  • KC-based Support:
    • Check out our Virtual Renewal Room that focuses on spiritual and emotional health, with content that includes breathing exercises, mediation, and other tips for reducing anxiety.
  1. Know Your Family History
  • Engage with primary care providers who can help interpret risks. If you need a primary care provider, call 816-404-CARE (2273).
