University Health Behavioral Health provides doctoral training experiences at our inpatient and outpatient locations throughout Kansas City. This internship program is designed to provide interns with a breadth of training, focused on evidence-based assessment and treatment intervention. University Health Behavioral Health’s internship program is a member of the National Psychology Training Consortium, which is an American Psychological Association (APA)-accredited program and an Association of Psychology Postdoctoral Internship Centers (APPIC) member.
Interns will gain in-depth exposure to both inpatient and outpatient mental health treatment with a combined experience. Interns will engage in a year-long rotation within the inpatient setting. Each intern initially will spend six months in either a child or adult outpatient clinic, switching in the middle of the internship to finish their last six months in the opposite clinic. Interns will attend various trainings throughout the course of the year provided by both University Health Behavioral Health and the National Psychology Training Consortium (NPTC).

University Health Behavioral Health Acute Care
University Health Behavioral Health Acute Care is an adult, inpatient psychiatric unit located in downtown Kansas City, and housed inside the building for the Center for Behavioral Medicine. Three inpatient units provide short-term acute care and stabilization for adults by offering a multidisciplinary treatment team approach.
The patient population includes adults 18 years of age and older with a vast range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, and mental health diagnoses.
Core Inpatient Services:
- Brief individual therapy
- Assessment
- Group therapy
- Supervision of practicum students
- Interdisciplinary treatment team meetings
Interns also may have the opportunity to observe risk assessment, civil commitment proceedings, and guardianship hearings, when available.
University Health Behavioral Health Crossroads Counseling
Crossroads Counseling is an outpatient clinic comprised of child/adolescent and adult services.
Core Outpatient Services:
• Initial psychosocial assessments
• Short-term individual psychotherapy
• Interdisciplinary collaboration and consultation
• Outcome measurement
• Assessment
• Group therapy
Primary supervisors have obtained the Telepsychology Competencies Credential and trainees will have the opportunity to be trained in the best practices of telehealth.
Service delivery could include a mix of in-person and/or telehealth, although trainees must remain on-site even for telehealth sessions.
