Trainees maintain a constant presence at University Health Behavioral Health. Trainees will be supervised by licensed psychologists, and training can be tailored to each individual's professional goals and path toward licensure.

Practicum Details
Practicum experiences at University Health Behavioral Health have a preferred commitment for one academic year. The number of days on-site and training/clinical interests will be discussed with an individual supervisor.

Practicum Rotation Options
University Health Behavioral Health Crossroads Counseling is an outpatient clinic comprised of child/adolescent and adult services. Core clinical and training experiences will include provision of initial psychosocial assessments, short-term individual psychotherapy, collaboration with staff from interdisciplinary teams, and outcome measurement.
Primary supervisors have obtained the Telepsychology Competencies Credential and trainees will have the opportunity to be trained in the best practices of telehealth.
Service delivery could include a mix of in-person and/or telehealth, although trainees must remain on-site even for telehealth sessions.
Additional clinical and training opportunities will vary based on the supervisor, as well as trainee’s professional interests and availability on-site.

The patient population includes children and adults with a vast range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, and mental health diagnoses.
University Health Behavioral Health Acute Care is an adult inpatient psychiatric unit located in downtown Kansas City in the UMKC Health Sciences District. The patient population includes adults 18 years of age and older with a vast range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, and mental diagnoses. Three inpatient units provide short-term acute care and stabilization for adults by offering a multidisciplinary treatment team approach.

University Health Lakewood Medical Center
The University Health Primary Care Bess Truman Family Medicine Center is home of the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Family Medicine Residency Program. This training site offers education and experience in integrative behavioral medicine, the consultation/liaison model, and working as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team.
Trainees will work as a comprehensive treatment team member with Family Medicine physicians, pharmacists, social workers, and nursing staff. Training will focus on the development of brief intervention skills, chronic disease management through behavioral modifications, and interprofessional communication and consultation. Inpatient consults occasionally are completed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), general medical/surgical floors, as well as labor and delivery.

Intermediate and advanced practicum students with a background or strong interest in integrated behavioral health preferred.
University Health Truman Medical Center
The University Health Infectious Disease Clinic (HIV Services) and the University Health LGBTQ Specialty Clinic are located in the UMKC Health Sciences District. This practicum is a unique opportunity to gain experience working within a combined integrated behavioral health and traditional therapy model, the consultation/liaison model, and as a part of two separate interdisciplinary medical teams.
Trainees will work as a comprehensive treatment team member with physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, case managers and peer educators.
Intermediate and advanced practicum students with a strong passion for advocacy and ally-ship, and the ability to be assertive are preferred.
Both the HIV and LGBTQ populations face enormous stigma in the healthcare field. An ideal applicant will need an understanding of the minority stress and the social determinants of health theories, and how they apply to marginalized populations.
