Program Overview
University Health Behavioral Health provides social work training experiences for both bachelor- and master-level students at our inpatient and outpatient locations throughout Kansas City. Social work students receive both individual and group supervision on a weekly basis, as well preceptor supervision.

Practicum Department Options
Bachelor-Level Practicum
The bachelor-level practicum opportunities include development of one-on-one relationship, co-facilitation of groups, and collaborative program development.
Department Options:
- University Health Behavioral Health New Frontiers
- UHBH New Frontiers provides psychosocial groups and activities focusing on self-esteem, mental health, nutrition, physical and mental wellness, music therapy, independent living skills and recreation.
- University Health Behavioral Health The Peer Center
- UHBH The Peer Center is a drop-in center and offers a variety of activities within a support network, and helps individuals develop social skills, job skills and symptom management skills.
- University Health Behavioral Health Outpatient Substance Use Services
- This program offers comprehensive services that include: assessment and treatment planning; individual, group, and family therapy; medication assisted treatment including Suboxone for opioid use; and, relapse prevention.
- University Health Behavioral Health Outreach
- The outreach team helps unhoused individuals who are experiencing mental health and/or co-occurring symptoms access quality housing and healthcare, including mental health services and substance use disorder counseling. By eliminating barriers to care, the Homeless Outreach team can help healthcare problems be detected and treated, decrease emergency department use for primary care, and provide overall health awareness and education.

- We have a number of different housing programs based on individual needs, including:
- Two group homes
- Individual scattered site apartments with on-site support
- HUD housing/Housing First program
- Housing location services
- University Health Behavioral Health Community Teams
- These teams provide case management, therapy and medication services (both in the community and in the office).
- Intensive Community Services (ICS) Adult
- Community Assistance Program (CAP) Adult
- Intensive Co-occurring Disorder Treatment (ICT) Adult
- The Futures program serves children, youth and young adult teens, ages 3-25
Master-Level Practicum
The master-level practicum training opportunities include development of one-on-one relationships, completion of intakes, psychosocial and annual assessment, and individual and group therapy.

- University Health Behavioral Health Inpatient Behavioral Health Acute Care
- The psychiatric hospital unit provides a safe environment for those struggling with mental health and/or substance induced crisis, including those at risk of hurting themselves or others. These units are at University Health in downtown Kansas City, Missouri as well as University Health Lakewood Medical Center in Lee's Summit, Missouri.
- University Health Behavioral Health Crisis/Emergency Department
- Serving individuals who enter the emergency department based on mental health and/or substance abuse crisis needs
- Three inpatient units provide short-term acute care and stabilization for adults by offering a multidisciplinary treatment team approach
Macro-Practice Internship
The Macro-Practice Internship activities will vary depending on your areas of interest and the needs of the organization. Training opportunities will include project planning and management within University Health Behavioral Health, as well as the local community.
